The gallery is delighted to announce that the Government Art Collection has acquired 3 large works by James Lomax from his recent exhibition; Hoarding, 2024, Shutter, 2024 and Store front, 2024.
Cast in concrete, these low relief works depict unopened envelopes scattered across anonymous surfaces. Drawing upon a photographic archive of images of vacant retail spaces in the artist’s hometown of London, Lomax made these works following a 2024 artist residency in partnership with Ikon Gallery at HMP Grendon, a Category B men’s prison in Buckinghamshire that specialises in therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation.
The Government Art Collection, established in 1899, is a national collection of historic, modern and contemporary British art that is displayed in government buildings in the UK and over 125 countries around the world.
