Sid Motion Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Jo Dennis. Exhibiting paintings and photographs from her most recent series titled Black Wall, the exhibition ‘A Kind of Solid Liquid’ presents a body of work produced directly on to glass, transparencies and found windows.

Dennis’ practice centres around abandoned places and objects, in this case documenting a derelict swimming pool in South London and collecting found windows. She explores how waste items and environments represent time past and present. The notions of ‘layering’ or ‘covering up’ and conversely, ‘revealing’ are integral to her practice both in what she photographs and the way she applies paint. Dennis draws parallels between the layering of paint and time as a multi-layered entity that manifests in these derelict spaces and objects.

The title ‘A Kind of Solid Liquid’ is a quote from Mark Pendergrast’s ‘Mirror, Mirror: A History of the Human Love Affair with Reflection’ and refers to the materiality of glass and the significance of the window which has historically been investigated in art history.The exhibited printed and painted windows offer us imagery which can be a reflection of what is inside or that which is outside, where the interior and exterior interchange. The use of found objects and transparent materials create slippages between layers and perspectives, questioning surface in a physical and metaphorical sense. 

Artist Biography

Jo Dennis studied at Norwich School of Art and Goldsmiths College London.
Dennis has exhibited internationally and has been included extensively in group exhibitions including at the ICA and The Royal Academy of Arts, in London. Recent solo exhibitions include; Solid Liquid, Peckham 24 2018, UK; Your feet in the air and your head on the ground, Peckham 24 2017, UK; Matter Out of Place, Sid Motion Gallery, UK, 2016 and Cropped Up at AMP Gallery, UK. Dennis exhibited a solo presentation with Sid Motion Gallery at Photo London in May 2018. Dennis lives and works between London and Amsterdam.
